Two contractors can walk the same Largo attic and quote two different materials. One wants to lay batts between the joists. The other wants to blow loose fiberglass over the top. On paper they can both reach the same R-value. In a real attic, with real ductwork and real truss webs in the way, they often do not perform the same at all.
The difference is coverage, not the label
Batt insulation arrives as pre-cut blankets sized to fit between framing. Blown-in insulation is loose material fed through a hose and drifted across the attic floor until it reaches the depth the job calls for. That is the whole mechanical difference, and it decides almost everything else.
My Florida Home Energy, the state's consumer energy resource, puts the point bluntly: how insulation is installed is almost as important as the R-value, and insulation that is compressed or installed with gaps will not function at its rated efficiency. A batt only delivers its rated number when it sits flat, at full thickness, edge to edge, with nothing crushing it.
Attics fight that. Truss webs, cross bracing, retrofit ductwork, wiring runs, junction boxes, bath fan housings and the occasional out-of-square joist bay all force cuts, and every cut is a chance to leave a sliver of bare ceiling. A one-inch gap does not cost you one inch of performance — heat finds the shortcut. Loose material has no shape of its own, so it fills around the obstruction instead of being trimmed to fit past it.
Why blown-in usually wins in an older Largo attic
Most of the Largo attics we open were not built with a future insulation job in mind. They are shallow at the eaves, tight between trusses, and crowded with equipment that was added years after the roof went on. Those are exactly the conditions where batts get cut, stuffed and compressed, and where blown-in insulation tends to give you the coverage you actually paid for.
It also handles the common case: you already have something up there and it is simply not deep enough. ENERGY STAR is clear that you do not have to match what is there — you can add loose fill on top of fiberglass batts, and the other way round. The one rule worth knowing is that if fiberglass batts go over loose fill, the batts must be unfaced, with no paper or foil backing, so you do not trap moisture between two layers.
When batts still make sense
Batts are not the wrong answer everywhere. They are a reasonable choice in open new-construction framing, on knee walls and other vertical surfaces where loose fill will not stay put, in a garage ceiling, and in small accessible areas where you do not want to bring a blowing machine in for an hour's work. If part of your attic is decked for storage, batts under the deck plus blown material across the rest is a normal, sensible split.
The number Florida actually asks for
Every Florida county outside the short list of far-south Zone 1 counties sits in Climate Zone 2, and Zone 2 calls for a minimum of R-38 in the ceiling. Pinellas County is Zone 2, so R-38 is the figure a Largo attic is measured against. In fiberglass that is roughly 10 to 14 inches of material depending on the product, which is why depth is the quickest thing to check yourself — if your insulation is level with or below the tops of the joists, you are well short.
One thing to ask about, whichever product you choose: settling. My Florida Home Energy notes that some types of insulation settle more than others, and that when insulation settles its cost effectiveness decreases. The depth on install day is not necessarily the depth you have in five years. A good installer works to the product's settled coverage chart and leaves attic rulers behind so the number can be checked later. What has to happen before either one goes in
This is the part that gets skipped, and it matters more than the product choice. Insulation slows heat; it does not stop air. My Florida Home Energy is specific: seal all openings and cracks along the ceiling, light fixtures, and top and sole plates with the appropriate products before installing insulation. Blowing fresh material over unsealed top plates and can lights buries the leaks without closing them.
Two more, in order. Never cover attic or soffit vents with insulation — in a vented attic the eave gap has to stay open, which usually means baffles at the perimeter before anything gets blown. And if what is up there now is wet, matted flat, rodent-contaminated or carrying an odor you cannot place, it needs to come out first. Topping up over that just seals the problem in; our page on insulation removal covers the signs. Where the ductwork and air handler live in the attic, it is also worth pricing spray foam at the roofline instead, because that moves the equipment inside the sealed envelope rather than leaving it in the heat.
Getting a straight answer on your own attic
There is no single right product, only the right one for what your attic looks like when the hatch comes off.
